I suspect the problem is in the transmission control module (TCM). The TCM interconnects with the power train control module (PCM) to, among other things; control the shift points on the transmission. The problem could also be a mechanical problem but I doubt it given that it can shift smoothly under 40 MPH. You should first go to your mechanic or local auto parts store and have them hook up an OBDII scanner to the vehicle and check for any fault codes. This will tell you what specific parts, sensors or modules are malfunctioning. It will save you hundreds of $$$ if you know what is wrong before replacing a lot of expensive parts. You should also check Edmunds.com website for recalls and technical service bulletins (TSBs) on your specific vehicle to see if the manufacturer has identified a common problem that they will repair under an extended warranty.
